My top 10 beers

still not complete but getting closer

Lets start by saying that these are not the best beers I have had. Then how can these be my top ten beers?

It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish with the list. If I chose simply the best beers I have had it would be mostly Imperial Stouts and Strong Belgian style ales. While these are my favorite styles and tend to be the beers I like the most it is not a varied list. Much of the enjoyment I get form beer is how different two good beers can be. I would get bored if all I could drink were Imperial stouts. One can only drink so many Great Divide Oak Aged Yetis.

In so many ways it is impossible to create a top ten of beers. There are so many styles and types that it is hard to narrow the list down. Where do you start? Do you look at other beer sites best beer lists? What about your own best beer list? What do you do about beers you know should be great but you have never had?

So for me this is group of beers that I have rated highly on ratebeer.com. This means only beers I have had since August 2007 can make it. They also represent a wide range of styles. While I have not tried to include every style I have tried to include beers that would suit most occasions. So whether it is a hot summer day, a cold winter night, a game day or a nice romantic dinner with my wife there is a beer in this list that I would be happy to have.

In alphabetical order here are my top ten beers and the styles they represent.
Bocq Christmas - Abbey Dubble
Duck Rabbit Baltic Porter - Baltic Porter
Gordon Xmas - English Strong Ale
Chouffe Houblon Dobbelen IPA Tripel - Abbey Tripel
Founders Red’s Rye - Rye Ale
Mikkeller Blackhole - Imperial Russian Stout
Ølfabrikken Porter - Porter
Oscar Blues Dales Pale Ale - American Pale Ale
Oud Beersel Oude Kriek - Lambic Fruit
Rogue Morimoto Imperial Pilsner - European Strong Pilsner
Schneider Aventinus Weizen Bock - Weizen Bock
Southern Tier Gemini Bells Hopslam - Imperial India Pale Ale
Stone Arrogant Bastard - American Strong Ale
Struisse Pannepøt Struisse Pannepot - Belgian Strong
Traquair Jacobite Ale - Traditional Ale

This list will be continually changed as I rate more beers. Some styles may appear while others will drop off the list. But it will always be a list that I would be happy to have in my cellar.

06/17/08 Update - Thought I would update the list to reflect some of the  beers that have been rated on this site.
